TIMEX EXPEDITION E COMPASS WATCHES. A SIMPLE REVIEW

Here’s what Timex have to say about their E Compass family of Epedition watches -

T49541 2The Expedition E-Compass watches employ a sophisticated, miniaturised sensor that detects the earth’s magnetic field with a press of a button.  Precise to within 10 degress the Expedition Electronic Compass watch allows the user to easily adjust for regional variation between magnetic and true north.

From the Timex Expedition range these E Compass quartz watches are robust in their build quality and are aimed at the outdoor wearer. The watch case itself is made from stainless steel or Titanium along with quality water resistant leather straps. The style is simple, solid and includes a static fluted bezel. The case back is polished stainless steel. Dimensions are #  42mm diameter excluding the crowns and buttons x 11mm deep.

Time is told by three hands, Hour, Minute and Seconds. The hour and minute hands are illuminous and show-up well in the dark.  The second hand is a slim red design which help to give a sporty feel to the dial.  The dial itself  comes in a variety of attractive colours.  24 hour markers are also present.  A quick-set date widow is at the  4 o’clock position. The glass cover is flush fitting to avoid scratches and scrapes.

The most important part of the E Compass range is its compass.  The Electronic compass is accurate to within 10 degrees and includes a Declination Adjustment Scale.  AT49201 press of the compass button and the 4th Compass Hand points directly north.  To save power the compass works for approx 15-20 seconds and then with an audible signal returns to its resting place at 12 o’clock.  The 15-20 seconds is ample time to read North or to show the direction you wish to go in or are coming from.  The lower crown on the watch case revolves the inner compass marked ring, which means once you point the N (North) marker to the compass point all directions are identified without you having to move round pointing your arm and wrist to North.  Although the compass is Electronic and not Mechanical its still important to use the watch fairly level to get an accurate readout.  During the compass operation the second hand moves at 2 second intervals which appears to send most of the available power to the compass mode without stopping the second hand all together.

T49551 2The Timex Expedition E Compass range of watches have the added bonus of being 100m water resistant and include the Indiglo Night Lite.  The Timex Indiglo Night Lite is reviewed in this blog site and is activated by a press of the main watch crown which saves the need to have a futher button.  The Indiglo Night Lite illuminates the whole dial and works very well.  The watch is finished off with a quality padded and stitched water resistant leather strap and matching steel buckle. The strap appears robust enough to cope outdoors but offer the wearer real comfort.

Overall, the Timex Epedition E Compass range of watches offer fantastic value for money particularly considering the standard of the electronic compass fitted and the general build quality.  MyWatchShop.co.uk has no hesitation in recommending the E Compass range.

What Is Timex “Indiglo Night-Light” And How Does It Work?

Filed under: Expedition, Indiglo, Ironman, Timex, Timex Indiglo — admin @ 11:23 pm

“Indiglo”  is the Timex Watch Company patent name for the technology used in their  watch illumination.

First used around 1989 the nightlights bluish green light illuminates the whole dial at the push of a button. The dial is coated with a compound of zinc sulfide mixed with copper, a substance which becomes luminescent when an electrical charge is applied.  This layer is sandwiched between two conductive layers which act as electrodes. When the button is pushed, energy is supplied by the battery across the two electrodes, which in turn lights up the dial.”  The Indiglo night-light is similar to other watch companies lrsz_indigloight technologies for example Casio.  Other colours of illumination are attainable by changing the contents of the substance.

Indiglo has been a success for Timex and is featured on more and more of their models including slim Ladies dress watches. The sports models such as Ironman and the outdoor models like Expedition usually have an extra button to press to illuminate the dial. Timex have a neat system available now where the single crown, which is used to set the time and date of the timepiece, can be pressed to activate the Indiglo system. This feature means dress watches for both Mens and Ladies can utelise Indiglo illumination without the use of a second button which may spoil the smoother classic lines of a dress watch.

More recently Timex have produced the “flix”  system to their Ironman Triathlon range of watches.  When wearing the watch a simple  flick of your wrist will activate the Indiglo light. This has proved to be extremely useful for runners and sports men and women generally as there are no buttons to push, its hands free and it will not interupt the rhythm of the runner etc. Also, this feature avoids the wrong buttons being pressed whilst the wearer is under stress and the loss of well earned timing information!

WHAT IS A SEIKO KINETIC WATCH?

ska369A Seiko Kinetic or Automatic quartz watch is a term describing their movement that combines a self-winding rotor mechanism (as used in automatic mechanical watches) to generate electricity with a piezoelectric quartz crystal as its timing element. Such movements aim to provide the advantages of quartz without the environmental impact of batteries.

A rotating pendulum inside the case is attached to a relatively large gear which meshes with a very small pinion. As the wearer moves, the pendulum turns and spins the pinion at a very high speed – up to 100,000 rpm. This is coupled to a miniature electrical generator which chska380arges a storage device which is a capacitor(s) .  A typical full charge will last between two weeks and six months.

Initially there were some problems with faulty capacitors in the ESU (Electronic Storage Unit). Since the year 2000 Seiko changed to a new Titanium Lithium Rechargeable Cell. This not only solved the problem of reliability it also had the advantage of being able to hold a charge for much longer, sometimes up to 6 months from a full charge.

Seiko Kinetic movements are very much part of Seiko’s future plans, after the introduction of Kinetic Chronograph, Kinetic Auto-Relay, Kinetic Dive and Kinetic Perpetual models the “Kinetic Direct Drive” is the new kid on the block.
In essence, Seiko Kinetic movements offer the clean mechanical aspects of traditional watches with the accurate technology of quartz watches.

Seiko Pilot Aviator chronograph alarm watch sna027p1. A review.

I haven’t been able to find a review of the superb Seiko Pilot Aviator Chronograph Alarm sna027p1 watch which comes as a real surprise!

dscn87341If you want a watch which is robust enough to tackle most outdoor persuits, swim and snorkel in and go out for the evening whilst wearing then this model must be of interest to you.

Military styling is the theme here with an easy read dial and Seiko’s infamous Lumibrite (luminous) hands and hour markers. There are no flash polished surfaces  except for the secure screw down case back. The military theme continues with the quality medium thickness green strap.

The watch case is manufactured in matt stainless steel and has a diameter of 38mm excluding the crown and buttons. The sna027p1 has the well respected and relaible Japanese built 7t62 quartz alarm chronograph movement in place. This is a movement that has served Seiko extremely well being accurate and reliable under all situations. The chronograph stopwatch mode is indicated by the large arrow head hand which shows seconds whilst the sub dial at 12 o’clock position indicate the minutes elapsed. The sub dial located at 9 o’clock  shows the seconds of ordinary time and the sub dial at 6 o’clock is used to set the alarm time. This dial can also be used as a second time zone indicator. The chronograph pushers (buttons) match the watch case and have an interesting detail of being capped rather than smooth to the end which adds to the feeling of quality and increases the look of being a military timepiece. The crown itself is semi-protected with the case shoulders.

The Seiko Pilot Aviator Chronograph Alarm sna027p1 is water resistant to 20 bar (200m) which makes it capable of being worn in most aquatic situations except for scuba (aqualung) diving. The crown is screw down type which needs to be kept screwed down tight but not over tight, to avoid water ingress. The case back is also the required screw down varietydscn87402

The dial itself is of a subtle military green colour which appears to reduce unwanted reflections. The Lumibrite hands and hour markers are easily visible in the dark including the chronograph arrow head second hand. Seiko’s Lumibrite (luminous) paint has become one of the Industries leaders and is doesn’t look as though any other manufacturer has been able to match it as yet. There is a quick-set date window at 3 o’clock. The dial is covered by Seiko’s Hardlex scratch resistant crystal which again is industry leader and is lightly curved to follow the contours of the watch case.

The sna027p1 is finished off with a military green material strap. It appears to be very well made without being too obtrusive. All reports point to the strap being comfortable and reliable with the added security of a matching stainless steel buckle, strenghend pin holes and a single large strap keep.

Overall, the Seiko Pilot Aviator Chronograph Alarm sna027p1 is an attractive practical timepiece which offers many benefits having an alarm, chronograph stopwatch, being 200m water resitant and all coming together in a matt stainless steel case. The watch simply looks and feels right, being well balanced and attractive it offers superb value and is a quality watch which continues to be undervalued.

Here at MyWatchShop.co.uk we are more than happy to recommend the Seiko sna027p1.

Seiko Monster Black SKX799K Divers Watch Review.

1Seiko Monster Black SKX779K Dive Watch Review.

It’s a cracker!

The Seiko Black Monster SKX 779K Divers Watch and the Seiko Orange Monster SKX781K have been around for quite a few years now and over this time has built a large following due to its superb engineering, fantastic good looks and exceptional value for money.

This revue will not go into great detail as there are plenty of other reviews around which do and are easily available. Rather, a simple informative look at this wonderful timepiece for the person who recognises quality and value but doesn’t necessarily want or need to know every detail.

The Seiko Monster Black is a large chunky watch made from a combination of brushed and polished stainless steel. The watch case is 42mm diameter excluding the crown and 13mm thick. It is a full 200m /20 Bar Water Resistant and has a screw-down case back and a screw-down crown.

The Divers bezel is of the proper uni-directional type and is engineered to a very high standard. It’s one of the first things that you notice when handling the watch, the bezel turns smoothly on its ratcheted mechanism and is very definite with each click but continues to rotate in a friendly manner. The screw down crown is at the 4 o’clock position which is quite common for Seiko automatic watches and has two positions when unscrewed and pulled out. The first position is to change the Day and Date and the second to set the time

dscn89012The 7S26 Calibre automatic 21 jewel movement has a reputation for robust build quality and longevity. . The automatic movement cannot be wound using the crown which, if you are wearing the watch every day does not matter. If the watch is not worn beyond the approx 42 hour power reserve then it will need to be shaken gently to produce some power to the mechanism or the use of an automatic watch winder would make things much easier. As all mechanical movements it will never be as accurate as a quartz watch but many people prefer wearing a watch that has the heart and soul of a living breathing timepiece. On the basis of observation and customer feedback accuracy is usually within +/- 20 seconds a day. So a good reliable automatic watch.

The dial is black and includes both a quick-set day and date window. The most common colours of the model are Black or Orange with limited editions of yellow or blue variants. The dial itself is sunk in the watch case giving an overall feeling of depth and solidness. One of the Monster Blacks many strong points is the large luminous hands and hour markers The lume takes a bit of charging but once lit up the light given off is outstanding.

The watch cover is Seiko’s Hardlex material being extra strong and scratch resistant. Not quite “Sapphire” standard but still good and much safer to use under water than Sapphire!

3The SKX779k comes with either a stainless steel or rubber bracelet / strap. For this short review we will look at the bracelet option. Again, being all stainless steel it has solid links (not pressed) and gives a feel of quality and strength. Being heavy it makes the whole timepiece well balanced and really comfortable to wear. The clasp has a double safety mechanism which incorporates a Divers Expansion for use over wet suits etc. The expansion is hidden from view when not in use under the clasp and has proven to be easy to use.

Overall, the Seiko Monster Black with its competitive price tag and superb build quality and functionality is nothing less than fantastic. Not everyone’s choice either you’ll love it or loathe it. Certainly, there’s a huge following of the model in its various guises and a live collectors market for its rarer variants which can command really high prices.

MyWatchShop.co.uk believe that the Monster Black well deserves our recommendation.

Citizen Eco Drive Power Generating and Storage system.

eco-drive-diagram

The Citizen Eco Drive power system has been available since 1995 and has proven to be very successful for the Citizen Watch Co. In essence Eco Drive watches are Solar or Light powered timepieces.

Being highly technically advanced but at the same time very simple. A Solar conversion panel and energy cell are the power provider for these Quartz Watches. Light, both natural and artificial is converted into electrical energy by an extremely thin disc of Silicone located under the watch dial. The electrical energy is then stored in a Titanium Lithium-ion energy storage cell.

Depending on the model, once fully charged Eco Drive watches, if left in the dark will continue to tell accurate time from a matter of months to up to 5 years if it is the model with energy saving functions. Models with the energy saving modes will shut down if left in the dark, with the hands being still but the quartz movement continues to keep time. Once brought out into the light the watch wakes up and the hands return to telling the correct time.

Many differant watch styles and functions are now available with the Eco Drive system due to an increase in efficiency. Eco Drive Chronographs, Alarm, Divers, Moon Phase, Retrograde, Repeater and even small Ladies watches are available. The Eco Drive Divers watches have a clear following as Divers watches need to be pressure tested when a battery is changed. As the advanced Titanium Lithium-ion energy cell usually last beyond ten years and often for the life of the watch the expensive pressure tests can be avoided.

The Eco Drive system has been very successful for Citizen so much so they seem to be offering more models with the technology rather than normal quartz watches. The system certainly appears to be well regarded and reliable.
